Monday 19 May

Ralstons Junior Newton Shield Team had another great win tonight against Cochrane Castle.

Ralston's reign as Jessiman Trophy Champions came to an abrupt halt, on Sunday, when the team lost to Clober Golf Club, by just 1 hole, in the 1st round of the competition. In an exciting match, the big hitting Clober team, holed the putts at important times, to see off Ralston. It was ironic that the Ralston boys "lipped out" with crucial putts, and missed some makeable ones, whereas Clober holed a few "tram liners", which proved the difference at the end of the day.

Tee Positions
At the weekend after greenstaff had set up the course someone proceeded to move some of the tee markers to the full width of the tees. At this time of year when the grass is not strong enough to cope with stress and wear, greenstaff monitor teeing areas and move markers accordingly. This is why we would like to ask for the members help to make sure this does not happen again.

Greens
The course is closed today due to the heavy rain and high winds last night. The high winds have caused a number of trees to fall on different areas of the course. Most of the trees that have been damaged are mature conifers. These trees are shallow rooted and the poor drainage in a number of areas of the course has been a contributing factor. Due to this unexpected damage the next week or so will have to be dedicated to tidying these areas and ensuring all trees are made safe.

Tuesday 6 November

The high temperatures that we are experiencing just now combined with the wet weather is causing Fusarium on the greens to thrive. We have been spraying Fungicide to combat this. With the attack of disease being so severe one application has not been enough to cure this. Throughout this attack of disease we have been working closely with our agronomist Neil Baldwin and he has recommended that we apply one or possibly two more applications of Fungicide to stop this attack.
Cimate change is starting to have a major effect on the amount of disease we are having to manage on our greens here at Ralston. If members would like more information about the effects of climate change on our golf course the area manager of STRI has done a report that can be seen on www.sgeg.org.uk/. Some copies of this will also be placed in the bar area for members to read.
